Diving in the Similans

December is a great time to visit Similan National Park, a sure paradise for divers and nature lovers in search of unspoilt beaches.

The park consists of nine islands off Phangnga Province and has been rated by US publication Skin Diving as one of the top ten dives in the world.

The tsunami last December has minimal affect on its underwater ecosystem. In fact, new species of fish have been sighted in its waters.

The best way to enjoy the underwater treasures of the Similans is via liveaboard vessels, several of which operate out of Phuket offering tours lasting from a few to several days.

For instructions, call the Tourism Authority of Thailand's office in Phuket at 076-211-213.

Individual travellers can take a boat from Thap Lamu pier in Thai Muang District of Phangnga.

To rent a bungalow, contact the park office located at 93 Moo 5, Ban Thap Lamu, Phetkasem Road, Thai Muang District, or call 076-595-045, 076-595-210 or its office in Bangkok at 02-579-5734.
