Exploring Thailand on wheels

Bike & Travel is organising a 65-day 6,500-kilometre "bicycling for health" tour covering 39 provinces during September to December.
Participants will be pedalling about 120 kilometres a day during the tour split into two legs; the first lasting 44 days from September 24-November 6, and the second 21 days from November 21-December 11. Each participant will be required to pay a contribution of 30,000-35,000 baht to cover various expenses during the tour.

The tour is open to every biking enthusiast in every age range who is ready to go the distance. "I want to promote bicycling in Thailand as a vehicle to explore the country and for pleasure," says Bike & Travel manager Tanin Rittavirun.

Apart from attracting young people who relish a challenge, his other aim is draw out the elderly and retirees from their homes and return them to active life.

Already, about 15 experienced bikers in various age groups have expressed their interest and the organisers are expecting some 3,000 to sign up by the time the tour gets underway. For those who can't spare the time, they can join the tour at their own disposition but will have to foot their own bills. There is no entry fee.

The tour kicks off at Sanam Luang, Bangkok, on September 24. Bikers pedal to Kanchanaburi and from there take the Uthai Thani, Nakhon Sawan, Kamphaeng Phet, Tak, Mae Sot, Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai route. From Chiang Mai they proceed to the northeastern and eastern provinces before returning to Bangkok.

The second leg begins with a train ride to Chumphon from where participants cycle to Ranong, Trang and Phattalung with a detour to Phuket and Ko Samui.

Biking can be a pleasurable pastime and healthy exercise. Bike and Travel has several clients who are past 50.

"The tour is not only about cycling," says Tanin, "but sight-seeing as well."
